My biggest hairstyle change and how I’m treating my hair (with avocado hair mask recipe)

My hair journey isn’t unique at all, and like so many, I’ve experienced a love-hate relationship with my brown tresses. After years of dyeing, straightening, and neglecting my hair, I decided to go heat-free. And while my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been, after many years of embracing my natural hair, it felt like my hair never fully healed.

The healing process was disheartening at times since many girls would comment on my hair. While I would change in PE, one girl would make a point to touch my hair and inspect my hair and say it looked “really dry”. There were also many instances when people told me my hair would look “so much better” if I just “did it” (a term referencing the straightening of your hair).

As I grew older and less susceptible to snarky comments, I realised there was absolutely nothing wrong with my type 2b hair. So many women tried to recreate wavy hair, and aside from combating a bit of frizz from time-to-time, there was no reason to straighten my hair ad nauseum.

Sadly, my little sister had a similar experience with jabs about her hair taking the cake. My sister has type 3b hair, which is very curly, and majority of her friends had straight hair. On many occasions, she felt like the odd one out. The few friends who had a similar hair texture to hers would straighten their hair. But unlike me, she’s never succumbed to the pressure to style her hair, so her hair was quite thick and lush up until high school. Unfortunately, stress caused my baby sister to develop alopecia, and her hair started thinning (even more so because of how tightly she wore her hijab).

Last week, after some deliberation, she decided to shave her head. Hoping it would help with her condition. My family teased her in jest, but my mom and noticed how self-conscious she felt about going bald and decided we would shave our heads in solidarity with her.

It felt weird at first, but it also felt great to start afresh with our hair. It’s a truly freeing experience and one we’ve yet to regret. While our hair grows out, we’re making sure to treat the new growth every day.

I’ve been mostly trying to treat a psoriasis flare-up on my scalp, and coconut oil has been my go-to treatment. I’ve also discovered the amazing benefits of avocado oil to help mitigate psoriasis benefits. This was convenient for me because avocado is a great treatment for your skin and hair. The fruit is also rich in biotin, vitamins and fatty-acids which bodes well when trying to achieve healthier hair.

Regular treatment can help to mitigate split ends and leave hair feeling moisturised and soft.

How to incorporate avocado into your haircare routine:

 (If you have long hair double the recipe)

1 tbsp avocado oil/1 small avocado (ripe)

1 tbsp honey

1 tbsp Greek/plain yoghurt

*optional ingredients:

1 tsp coconut oil

1 banana

A few drops of peppermint oil

Mix everything in a bowl and apply from root to tip. Leave on for 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your time constraints and whether or not you prefer to deep condition your hair. Honey is another ingredient that does wonders for your hair. It can hydrate, strengthen, promote hair-growth. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is perfect for psoriasis and eczema sufferers.

Yoghurt can help to strengthen hair, but I’ve already covered all of its benefits in my previous hair masking posts.

While coconut oil works well, it feels quite greasy and sometimes requires you to wash your hair multiple times before your hair is oil-free. Avocado oil feels a lot more lightweight in comparison to coconut oil. Both oils can help to improve dandruff by adding moisture to the scalp.
